On April 28, 2006, The Electromagnetics Academy (TEA) is sponsoring a short course lecture for those interested in electromagnetic research, particularly in left-handed metamaterials, their theory and applications.
Online Registration
LHM Shortcourse will be presented at the mentioned date of April 28, 2006 at the Royal Sonesta Hotel Boston in Cambridge, MA.
Course Summary:
Left-handed metamaterials (LHM) are at the center of an emerging field
in applied physics. Their new and unusual properties have spread
interests in an extremely wide variety of disciplines, ranging from
fundamental and applied electromagnetics, microwave engineering,
condensed matter, material study, to nano-technologies and infrared
physics. This course is designed to provide the fundamental theoretical basis
of this new field as well as updates on its most recent realization and
applications in the microwave range. The course will present some of the most
recent results published in the literature, and will emphasize the challenges,
novelties, and potential new applications of this exciting new field.
The course is divided into four parts:
Part 1: Prof. J. A. Kong
9:00 AM - 10:15 AM
Fundamental concepts of left-handed media, negative refraction, constitutive relations, dispersion relation, backward phase, frequency dispersive media, causal media.
Part 2: Dr. T. M. Grzegorczyk
10:30 AM - 12:00 PM
Propagation in anisotropic and bianisotropic media, elliptic and hyperbolic dispersion relations, inversion of critical angle, refraction laws, applications.
Part 3: Dr. B.-I. Wu
1:00 PM - 3:00 PM
Guided waves in left-handed media, poles related to the guided waves and their relations to the super-resolution of such media.
Part 4: Dr. H. Chen
3:15 PM - 5:00 PM
Design and applications of left-handed metamaterial, equivalent circuit model and experimental studies of metamaterial.
Who Should Attend:
This short course is intended to those interested in new
electromagnetic phenomena and fundamental physics, with direct
applications to microwave and optical devices. Students using
electromagnetic theory in their research (ranging from low frequencies
to optical frequencies) will benefit from this class and might
find interesting ideas for their personal research topics.
